Lana Awad, a young Palestinian girl from Tulkarem, a student in the Arab American University of Jenin (AAUJ) was a part of PS4L European Volunteer Service (EVS) program with a Turkish organization in Samsun between the months of July and August in the TALEUKEMIA – BRIDGE OF HOPE program organized by OMU.

Lana supported existing volunteering efforts in terms of planning and carrying out fundraising activities, packing donations, socializing and learning to greet in different languages with youth and children treated at Children Oncology Ward of OMU Medical Faculty. Lana was also involved with other international volunteers in terms of assisting the International Relations Office – EVS Office in their work.

Lana described the experience as life-changing because she got the chance to meet different people from different backgrounds and different cultures and to work with them, which made her appreciate the beauty of the diversity. Nevertheless, she said that the language barrier was challenging at first, but she got used to it.

Lana’s experience on working as humanitarian in a hospital changed her perspective towards things. She is planning to spread the beauty of the culture of voluntary work and to help people in her own country.

Lana gained an international experience, which will help her in achieving her goal, which is making the world a better place for everyone.
