A New Adventure in Palermo: Anton’s Volunteering Journe
Starting a new adventure in a new country can be both exciting and challenging. For Anton, his volunteering journey in Palermo, Italy, has already become a meaningful experience filled with new friendships, learning opportunities, and a sense of belonging.
After just one week in Palermo, Anton already feels at home. He describes the local people as kind, welcoming, and always ready to help, even when there is a language barrier. Their warmth has made settling into a new environment much easier than he expected.
Sharing an apartment with five other volunteers was another new experience for Anton. What initially felt unfamiliar quickly became an opportunity to build friendships and share everyday moments. He has also found it easy to meet new people and connect with others in the city.
“I wasn’t expecting to adapt so quickly, but after just one week, I already feel at home. The people I’ve met and the friendships I’ve made have made this experience truly special.”
As part of his volunteering placement at CESIE, Anton has also been welcomed by a supportive team that has helped him feel comfortable and cared for. His journey began with orientation training, where he had the opportunity to learn more about his new environment and meet his mentor, Giulia, whom he describes as an incredibly kind and supportive person.
Although his journey has only just begun, Anton is already grateful for the opportunities ahead. He sees this experience as a chance to grow personally, develop new skills, discover a different culture, and become more confident and independent.
Looking ahead, Anton is excited to make the most of his time in Palermo and continue learning throughout his volunteering experience.
His story is a reminder that stepping outside our comfort zones can open the door to new friendships, personal growth, and unforgettable experiences.
As the sending organisation for Anton’s volunteering journey, PS4L supports young Palestinians in accessing international volunteering and learning opportunities through the European Solidarity Corps. These experiences allow young people to discover new cultures, develop practical skills, build connections, and gain experiences that contribute to their personal and professional development.
